New law on irradiating well people: will it stop screening companies profiting?

I don’t know. I hope so.

An amendment has been made to the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) (Amendment) Regulations 2011.

It comes into force on July 25th.

It says that “At the end of regulation 3(a) (application) of the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2000(3) after “medical diagnosis or treatment” insert “, including any exposure of an asymptomatic individual”.

I think this means that a legal challenge could be made against a doctor requesting irradiation of a well person in high-street CT screening services.

I also think it will make it much easier for the GMC to act.

Bets on what will happen? I am hopeful, but suspect it will need legal and GMC challenge to change the current nonsense being sold to us for substantial sums, and with risk of substantive harm.
